2020-21 Adidas Home Game Worn
#28 Marcus Pettersson
Manufacturer: Adidas
Size: 56
Purchased From: The Dollar Energy Fund/Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation "Jerseys for Warmth" Auction
Lettered by: Pro Knitwear
The Story: Each year, the Penguins wear a set of jerseys for one home game, which are then autographed and sold at auction by NHL Auctions and the Pittsburgh Penguins Foundation. 100 percent of the proceeds of the auction are donated to the Dollar Energy Fund for their "Jerseys for Warmth" auction, and those proceeds are matched dollar-for-dollar to help provide low-income households around the Pittsburgh area with basic utility service. These jerseys are standard home jerseys (as shown in photos from the game above) with special authentication tags sewn into the inside rear hem.
The 2020-21 season's Jerseys for Warmth game was held on May 6 against Buffalo. Four and a half minutes into the second period of a 2-2 game, Marcus Pettersson vacated his left defense position and broke open down the left wing. He took a pass from Frederick Gaudreau in stride and attempted a cross-crease pass to Jared McCann, but Buffalo netminder Michael Houser cut the pass off with his left pad. The rebound was kicked right onto the tape of newly-acquired center Jeff Carter, who scored his third goal of the game at 4:36 en route to a four-goal game and, more importantly, an 8-4 Penguins win in their second-to-last game of the 2020-21 regular season. Pettersson was credited with the primary assist and was a +2 for the night in 18:29 of ice time.
A second-round pick by the Anaheim Ducks in 2014, Pettersson returned to his native Sweden to continue his development in the Swedish Hockey League. He began his North American pro career in 2017-18 with the AHL's San Diego Gulls before debuting the Ducks in February of that season. Pettersson made the Ducks NHL squad out of 2018 training camp and played 27 games for Anaheim before being traded to Pittsburgh for forward Daniel Sprong. The move east paid immediate dividends for the stay-at-home defenseman and he jelled in the Penguins system, scoring two goals and 19 points in 57 games in black and gold. Penguins management was impressed with his hockey sense at such a young age, and midway through the 2019-20 season they signed him to a five-year contract extension, locking him up through 2024-25. He's a defense-first player, but he also has an accurate shot from the point and distributes the puck well in the offensive zone. When he's deep in the offensive zone, he'll even flash the hands of a goal scorer on occasion! But keeping the puck out of the Penguins net is his top priority, and he'll be doing so for a long time to come!
Upon receipt of the jersey, I was able to do some research and found a couple of high-resolution game photos from the May 6 game in which this jersey was worn. After comparing these photos to the jersey, I was lucky enough to put together a three-point photomatch (see below) referencing a loose white thread on the verso "2,", a permanent crease in the jersey along the bottom hem, and a sewing alignment error with the "2" on the right sleeve. One other detail for the 2020-21 jerseys was the fact that, throughout the NHL, players wore tracking chips in their jerseys that tracked things like speed, distance skated, and other telemetry data. Inside the rear right shoulder, a slit was cut to allow the chip to be placed in between the reinforced shoulder layers and some pocket edges were sewn into this jersey to hold the chip in place.
Getting a good deal on a photomatched gamer with only a little wear AND helping out a great cause? Sounds like a deal I can't pass up! And I'm happy to add a Pettersson gamer to the collection.
