The Story: I've said quite a few times on this site that every jersey in my collection has a story. For this one, the story is pretty obvious. And funny. And yet another reason why my wife is the greatest!
It was Christmas time. We have a daughter at home and family, so we have to spend money at Christmas time. My Christmas present was the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Christmas gamer that came as part of a two-jersey package with another WBS game-worn jersey, so I had pretty much maxed out my Christmas budget. I had received both jerseys and I was very happy with them, but the Mrs. was watching one of those Bravo Network shows that drive me up a wall. I especially hate the Real Housewives series that the ladies in my house are all enamored with, mainly for three reasons: 1) those aren't "real" people; 2) you don't qualify to be called a "housewife," which I think warrants a level of respect, when you have a staff in your mansion waiting on you, your husband, and your kids; and 3) who wants to watch a bunch of catty women be catty with each other? Not me!
However, my wife had control of the remote and, after just having received these two awesome jerseys, I wasn't about to fight her on it. It's called give and take, right? So I sat quietly and, for reasons I definitely don't know, because I hate looking if I can't buy, I searched for "penguins jersey" on eBay. I don't know if I had been such a good guy that I deserved it, but this jersey was the second one to come up in the listing. With an inscription like this, how could I pass it up? And since the inscription was so specific, "to Jeff," the price was actually lower than any other signed Mario authentic would be! I double-checked and triple-checked various autograph sites to find inscriptions of other autographed Lemieux merchandise, and the inscription was a perfect match to the other stuff I found (especially the "Best Wishes" part, which he writes a lot). I looked at my wife and said, "you're not going to believe this," then showed her the picture. She looked at me like I was stupid. At this point, I was trying to think of a way to quickly unload the jerseys I had just bought when she said, "you're an idiot if you don't buy that jersey. When are you going to find another signed Mario jersey that says 'To Jeff?'"
And that, my friends, is why my wife is the greatest wife in the world!
I did hold off a few months before buying the frame for it. All of my other jerseys hang neatly in a closet, but this one's too pretty to hang in a closet! It's in that frame, on display in my gameroom!
