The Story: I really thought the Deryk Engelland team-issued jersey I purchased from J & J Distributing was a fine addition to my collection. So with that one being a white road jersey, the next logical progression was to get a black one! I made my way down to the Pittsburgh Hockey Expo, an annual event at the church located right next to the Consol Energy Center, to check out some of the old game-worn jerseys that I could only dream about getting and to see if I could get lucky and find some kind of deal. While I was there, I was able to find a couple of jerseys that I liked and a good deal as well! How about $250 for two jerseys? Not too bad, huh?
The first of the two was a Zach Sill back-up jersey from the 2013-14 season. Being a back-up jersey, it never made it onto the ice. To me, that's like getting a brand new jersey with the customizations and alterations of a gamer but without all the damage that comes with game use. Some collectors like jerseys that are used and abused, but that's not my thing. The thing that really made this one a special find, at least for me, was the fact that it was customized with a second fight strap in the front of the jersey. Evidently, Sill likes to keep his jerseys tied down when he's fighting, so the Penguins equipment manager, Dana Heinze, sewed an additional fight strap into the jersey. I noticed a little bit of stitching on the front of the jersey at the very bottom corner of the crest, which I first thought was a team repair. A closer inspection, however, revealed the second fight strap. I had heard of enforcer's jerseys having two straps, but I never saw it before, so adding something unique like this to my collection was a pretty neat experience.
