The Story: Now that I had gotten a taste of how much better authentic jerseys were in quality compared to the CCM replicas of the day after buying my Rick Tocchet jersey, I was determined that all of my jersey purchases moving forward were going to be authentics. The next logical step was to buy a road authentic jersey, which I did. I forget the price I paid, but I got a killer deal on this Ken Wregget jersey.
As I say throughout the site, every jersey has a story. This one didn't have much of one, at least until New Year's Eve of 1997. My wife and I weren't really into partying, so we weren't going anywhere for New Year's Eve. Instead, we headed out to Chuck E. Cheese's in the late afternoon with our son to play some games and have some fun before we headed to a family get-together later that evening. While we were playing games, I noticed a familiar face across the room. Better yet, our son - only eight years old at the time - noticed that same face! Of all people, on New Year's Eve, Penguins defenseman Kevin Hatcher was at Chuck E. Cheese's. My son walked up to him and politely asked, "Are you..." Before anything else could come out of his mouth, the man said, "Yes, I'm Kevin Hatcher." He thanked our son for recognizing him and for being a Pens fan, then asked him if he wanted anything signed as long as they did it without bringing attention to him. Hatcher signed my son's Penguins jacket and he also signed my Wregget jersey, which I just happened to be wearing. He then played a few games with our son before going back with his family.
They say that, of all professional athletes, hockey players are the most down-to-earth. That may or may not be true, but I can tell you that Kevin Hatcher certainly is. He took time away from his family - and he has a job that takes him away from his family frequently - to really make a young boy feel like a million bucks. I'll always remember and appreciate what he did for our son that night, and this jersey is a tangible reminder of that.
