The Story: I've never been a huge fan of college hockey. I do know, however, that college hockey in New England is similar in popularity to high school football in Texas. In other words, it's huge! And I've watched parts of the annual Beanpot Tournament in Boston, where some of the best in college hockey is on display. Four of the most storied college hockey programs in the world, all from the Boston area, take part in the Beanpot for nothing more than bragging rights over their most intense rivals. It's a lot of fun to watch, even if you don't know the players. But I am a huge fan of hockey jerseys, so when the opportunity arose to own a timelessly iconic Boston University jersey worn by a current Penguin, it raised my eyebrows a bit. When I found that I could do so at a really good price, I jumped at the opportunity!
Penguins right winger Evan Rodrigues was one heck of a hockey player at Boston University! Playing all four years, he was the Terriers' alternate captain in his senior year when he finished second in NCAA scoring behind his linemate, Hobey Baker award winner Jack Eichel with 61 points in 41 games. After learning a bit about his college career, I was shocked to learn that he went undrafted in the 2015 NHL Entry Draft before signing with the Buffalo Sabres. After a couple of up-and-down seasons with Buffalo, he was acquired by the Pens at the 2020 trade deadline. He finished out the season with Pittsburgh before having his free agent signing rights traded to Toronto as part of the deal that brought Kasperi Kapanen back to Pittsburgh. However, only 15 days later, the Pens resigned him to a one-year contract for the 2020-21 season. He's developed into a solid and speedy bottom-six forward who's strong on the penalty kill, but he still has some scoring touch at the NHL level as well. He's been slowed by injuries throughout his Penguins tenure, so a full season could do him some good.
This jersey is his BU home jersey from his 2012-13 sophomore season. This is the year he broke out in the NCAA ranks, scoring 14 goals and 34 points in 38 games. Upon receiving it, I tried to find some photos of him wearing this jersey, some of which are shown at the top of this page, but I surprised myself to discover a photo from which I found a three-point photomatch. High-res photos from college hockey aren't overly easy to find, but this level of photomatch from an early-season game (before there's a lot of wear on the jersey) was certainly unexpected. This classic style of jersey complete with Hockey East conference and Autism Speaks patchwork was certainly a welcome addition to the collection in April, 2021. And as I've said about multiple jerseys on this site, good luck finding someone wearing an E-Rod BU gamer at the next Pens game!
