The Story: There are a couple of recurring themes on this site that I repeat often. The first is, "It seemed that everybody and their brother had a Mario Lemieux Penguins jersey." The second is "I try to get the jerseys that not everyone has." This is one of those jerseys. For starters, the NHL didn't use this particular All-Star jersey design for too many years. Secondly, Lemieux jerseys with an "A" instead of a "C" aren't very common. Since the 1996 All-Star Game was held in Boston, they designated Ray Bourque as the Eastern Conference captain and, as a result, Mario was an alternate captain for this game.
I had wanted a Mario All-Star jersey, but I was in search of a 1990 model when I stumbled across this one. I really like this jersey and always wanted one, but others were just a higher priority. I was able to negotiate the price with the seller a little bit until I had a deal on the table that I couldn't say "no" to. Consequently, I ended up with a jersey that gets a lot of looks and comments whenever I wear it. It's 20-ish years old, but it's in fantastic shape and everything on the jersey - lettering and patchwork - is true to the 1996 game jerseys. I'm proud to have this one in the collection.
