The Story: I've mentioned before that I like to collect jerseys that aren't common among collectors, jerseys that everyone and their brother doesn't have on their backs at the games. So while black and white practice jerseys are relatively common, I haven't seen too many gray non-contact jerseys!
This jersey was picked up at the 2017 Pittsburgh Hockey Expo. It's a team issued, practice worn jersey. Of course, there's no telling who might've worn it, but while most players in practice wear the typical black and white jerseys, colored jerseys like this one are reserved for those players who are pariicpating in drills, but who are not cleared for contact. With this being the case, the wear on this jersey is rather unique. You can tell it has been washed a lot, as the Penguins crest shows some pretty heavy wear, but there's very minimal "game wear" on the jersey itself. There are some light board burns and paint transfers on the left sleeve, but other than that, the jersey is very much intact. So with these wear patterns, one can reasonably assume that the jersey was worn a lot, most likely by a lot of different players (as the Penguins seem to be decimated by injuries every year), but the damage to the jersey is very limited.
One thing I could never understand is the need for a fight strap inside of a practice jersey, but there's one inside of this one, along with the UPMC sponsor patch on the right chest and Reebok logo patches on the left chest and just below the rear neckline. All in all, I'm happy with this find and it's a neat addition to the collection.
