The Story: Still a young hockey fan after the Penguins one their first Stanley Cup in 1991, I started learning about the history of both the sport and the team. Coincidentally, the NHL was celebrating its 75th year and the Penguins were celebrating their 25th year in the 1991-92 season. It was at this time that the NHL and Apex One released a series of throwback replicas commemorating history. The Penguins version of that throwback - which came out before throwbacks were cool, then became uncool as they began to saturate sporting goods stores - loosely resembled the 1968-1972 Penguins home jerseys. They were actually billed as 1967 replicas, but I learned years later that both the white home jerseys and Columbia blue road jerseys from that, the Penguins first year of existence, actually had the diagonally-sewn "PITTSBURGH" across the chest. The pictures above are from the 1968-69 and 1969-70 seasons. This cotton-blend half-sleeve jersey featured wool patches, both on the team crest on the front as well as the NHL 75-Year patch on the right sleeve.
On a side note, why can I easily find color photos from that era, but finding color pictures of Mario Lemieux in a Laval uniform or John Cullen in a Pens uniform is so difficult?
